Operating within a highly regulated aerospace environment, the company supports the repair and overhaul of high-value components where accuracy, machine reliability and operator safety are critical. As repair requirements evolved, the business identified the need to enhance its heavy turning capability with a machine able to handle large and elongated components while maintaining the levels of control and repeatability demanded by aerospace repair operations.
Key requirements included the ability to perform heavy and interrupted cuts with confidence, deliver high torque at low spindle speeds for demanding materials, accommodate large workpieces and provide enhanced operator safety across the full length of the machine. Long-term support from a UK-based machine tool manufacturer was also an important consideration.
Following consultation with Colchester Machine Tool Solutions, the company selected a Colchester Magnum HD 1000 VS heavy-duty manual lathe, configured specifically to support aerospace repair and maintenance applications.
The Magnum HD 1000 VS is built around a one-piece floor-type cast iron bed, providing exceptional rigidity, vibration damping and long-term dimensional stability. This construction makes it particularly well suited to machining large aerospace components where process stability and workpiece accuracy are essential.
The installed machine features a 1,000 mm swing over bed and four metres between centres, providing the capacity required for large and long components. A 30 kW (40 HP) upgraded spindle motor delivers high torque at low speeds, enabling both efficient roughing and controlled finishing operations in the challenging materials typically encountered in aerospace repair work.
To maximise flexibility and productivity, the machine was supplied with a comprehensive package of tooling and accessories. These include a Multifix Model D quick-change toolpost system with multiple standard and boring bar holders, a two-axis digital readout system with an additional third-axis scale on the topslide, and both large three-jaw and four-jaw chucks to accommodate a wide variety of workholding requirements.
A heavy-duty steady rest with a 70-380 mm capacity, together with a heavy-duty rotating tailstock centre, provides additional support when machining long or slender components, helping to maintain accuracy and surface finish during demanding operations.
Recognising the importance of operator safety on a machine of this size, two additional emergency stop stations were installed at the headstock and tailstock ends of the lathe. This ensures rapid access to emergency controls regardless of the operator's position along the machine and enhances overall safety during day-to-day operation.
Colchester Machine Tool Solutions managed the delivery, installation and commissioning of the machine, ensuring it was correctly positioned, aligned and tested prior to handover. The installation was completed in January 2026, with the machine entering production immediately following commissioning.
